"The Doorkeeper's Task": Mark 13:32-37
No One Knows That Day or Hour
(32) "But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
(33) Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come.
(34) It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake.
(35) Therefore stay awake- for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning--
(36) lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.
(37) And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake."
How should we live in the mist of Christ's return?
Jesus is speaking to Peter, James, John and Andrew. He is really speaking to us.
We can learn 6 things from this passage:
- We learn of certainty of His return
- 2 Peter 3
- Lord has already judged the world in the flood, He will judge again
- No one knows when Jesus will return
- Deut. 29:29: "The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law."
- The day of Christ's return will arrive suddenly and without notice
- Jesus' return will bring both judgment and blessings
- Isaiah 2
- Amos 5:15 "Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph."
- Amos 9:11 "In that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen and repair its breaches, and raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old,"
- Not knowing the hour calls for continuous readiness
- We must be ready for that day!
- watching for Jesus
- What strays me from my watch?
- do the work God has given us
Let us be found spotless!
